About this Art Form
Jaipur Blue Pottery is a distinctive craft that uses no clay at all — instead it is made from quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Multani mitti (fuller's earth) and borax. The turquoise blue and white colour palette comes from cobalt oxide and copper oxide glazes, a technique that arrived in India via Persia and Central Asia during the Mughal period. Each piece is hand-shaped, hand-painted and fired at 850°C, making every item unique.
