About this art form
Coir craft transforms the humble coconut husk fibre into beautiful, durable products. Kerala, known as the land of coconuts, has a centuries-old tradition of coir-making, particularly in the Alappuzha (Alleppey) backwater region. The fibre is extracted from coconut husks through retting, then spun into yarn and woven into mats, rugs, wall hangings and contemporary home décor. The craft is entirely sustainable and biodegradable, supporting thousands of women-led cooperatives.
