About this Art Form
Chikankari is the art of hand-embroidery on fabric, originating in Lucknow under Mughal patronage. Traditionally done in white thread on fine muslin, this craft involves over 32 different stitches — from the flat tepchi to the raised murri and phanda. The translucent shadow-work (shadow stitch) where the design shows through the fabric is a hallmark. Each piece can take weeks to months to complete, reflecting extraordinary patience and skill.
